5 The Dust of A Man

Eternity (Environs)

THE LADY SHIDURI

SHIDURI’s drum.

SHIDURI: River stillness at Uruk, deceptive in its slacked,

Brown sense of time.

At the edges of the afternoon’s heat stands Fate, the Waiter god,

Dozing, the blank mask of eternity drawn over his face;

The discreet guardian to those who idle here,

To their little defeats,

Sipping wine in the shade of the mind’s palm

In Café Source, where things are un-momented,

Each lost day like an exile, writing home of its craving.

Or in the odd moment, waiting for Fate,

When a minute mis-registers at its edges,

And where a man, like Gilgamesh, sat in the sure salt of light,

There is suddenly no one to serve but the dust of a man,

Mingling with the spittle on the baking pavement,

His goodbyes snatched by a great evaporation.
